The Renewal Fund continued to grow over the festive season – which is remarkable in these straitened times, and much appreciated. The Christmas Coffee Morning organised by ‘The Geordie Girls’ (Jean Bainbridge and Anthea Aldous) and friends added £187, and boosted the ‘Spot The Shuttlecock’ amount (see P3). The Evening Gazette Wish Campaign added a further £142 when it came to their final shareout. Very many thanks to all those who clipped out and glued in the tokens last year. 38246 Private John Shaw of Liverton Mill was killed in action on May 4th 1917, whilst fighting for the British Expeditionary Force in France. The Great-uncle of Hilda Brown, he was described as ‘a miller and farmer’, and was serving with 6th Battalion of The Yorkshire Regiment. Hand-written letters from his platoon and company commanders give tribute to his bravery and cheerfulness, and his soldierly qualities.
Once again we are collecting the tokens being printed in the Evening Gazette. Last year Moorsholm villagers and friends collected 14,524 tokens, which raised £101.32 for the Renewal Fund.
Most recently, the Italian Pizza Night at Wren’s Nest was a great success, with Moorsholm’s very own outdoor wood-fired pizza oven enticing many hardy folk to sit out on a damp and windy night, eating fresh Italian food.
You may have noticed a couple of weeks ago there were 2 surveyors working at the Hall. They were taking exact measurements of the site so that the architect Geoff Stephenson can start to prepare his detailed drawings to get planning permission. It’s a small step, but a step nevertheless.
